Screen Time and Homeschooling

There is a lot of discussion about whether screen time, using electronic devices is good or bad for your child. At Griha Shiksha we look at this question from the other side. We don't ask whether screen time is good or bad, we ask what it replaces.

One of the goals of Griha Shiksha is to help grow resilient children who can cope well with life's challenges. We believe that one of the most significant factors in helping children develop resilient characters is to maximise the time they have with their parents.

In the early years of your child’s education there is none or very little knowledge the child requires which you, the parent, won’t know. Therefore using a device with a screen isn’t necessary for their learning. Because digital devices are everywhere, we no longer need to teach children how to use them. If we use screen time with our children we need to be intentional and purposeful. If it is for entertainment, then carefully select worthwhile entertainment but only for short periods. 15 to 20 minutes is enough screen time for a young child and a developing brain. If you find that your child is drawn to digital devices for time-pass, try to bring them into a face-to-face activity.

Face to face time is always better than screen time. So while devices may be useful tools, we don't encourage reliance on them for education for young children.
